On Saturday, we removed almost all the sand that had been beneath the block paving. We filled a one-tonne bag and could easily have filled another four with the amount there was.

We also removed a small wall and took down a fence to make more room for the groundworkers, who were due to arrive on Monday.

Then we marked out the excavations. The house turned out to be six centimetres wider than shown on the architect’s plans, so we had to adjust the setting out slightly. That took some time.

We considered using spray paint or chalk to mark the ground but chose string lines instead. That proved a good decision when we woke on Sunday to a covering of snow!

It wasn’t quite what we wanted the day before the digger arrived. We’ve been watching the forecast closely because cold weather could affect the concrete pour. Fortunately, warmer weather is expected over the next few days, so we’re planning to carry on.
